This class of ship designed “Escorteur d’Escadre” (Flotilla escort ship – destroyer) was designed for both air defence and anti-submarine warfare. Surcouf is the first of a series that included 18 ships built from 1951 to 1958. Last unit decommissioned was in 1991.

During their life, these ships have been largely modified, sometimes their main mission changed to take into account the needs of French Marine Nationale. In 1959-1961, the D'Estrées was used as experimental platform for embarked helicopters of the Alouette type.

All ships were involved in major operations of the Marine Nationale. 4 Surcouf class ships (among which the Kersaint) took part to Operation Musketeer (Suez 56). Jauréguiberry, Forbin, La Bourdonnais took part to the Task Force Alpha which was in charge of the protection of nuclear testing area in the Pacific Ocean. The Du Chayla was part of French Task Force that enforced the naval embargo against Iraq in 1990. La Galissonnière was the last of the Surcouf series. She was modified with a unique combination of different systems. Used mainly as a testing board between 1962 and 1983, she was the first ship to accommodate the Malafon ASW missile system.

All the vessels have been retired and have ended their careers either as wave-breakers or targets for testing. Only one ship has been kept: Maillé-Brézé is now a museum ship at Nantes (Western France).
