Notes: This class was designed and built by Split shipyard (today in Croatia) as much more capable (although slightly smaller) successors to the Heroj class and replacements for the earlier Sutjeska class. Both are named after major rivers in Yugoslavia. They are optimized for anti-surface warfare in the Adriatic. A “lip” on the aft end of the sail aids in reducing the sub’s signature while snorkeling. Drava entered refit during the Yugoslav civil war and never re-emerged; instead being stripped for parts to keep Sava going.

After the 2006 independence of Montenegro, the Montenegrin coast guard marked Sava for deletion in it's first-ever annual defence review; as almost all the crewmen were ethnic Serbian. (note in the 1990s-era picture above, a Serbian eagle was carried on the conning tower) For their part, the Serbian riverine flotilla apparently tried to maintain legal custody of the two submarines for some time, in the hopes that they could be sold to Egypt. Eventually this plan fell through and Sava was abandoned at Tivat in 2007. As of January 2009, both Sava and Drava are for sale by Montenegro, although it is admitted that they have deteriorated past the point of being useful as anything other than tourist attractions or scrap metal.
