Notes: This programme for replacing Greece’s motley fleet of ex-USN WWII landing craft began in the mid-1980s, but was severely delayed every step of the way by problems at Elefsis Shipyard, and Lesbos and Ikaria were commissioned out of order. In order to afford such elaborate LST’s, they use some second-hand equipment such as combat computers discarded by the German navy. They were originally to be named after mythological figures, but this was changed to islands along the disputed sea border with Turkey.
