SS-N-3 "Shaddock/Sepal"
(USSR)
Entering service in 1959, this anti-ship missile was carried by the Whiskey Twin Cylinder, Whiskey Long Bin, and Juliett class SSG's, the Echo II class SSGN's, and the Knyda and Kresta I class cruisers. The "Sepal" name is applied to the cruiser-launched variant, shich is slightly faster and longer-ranged. In the case of the submarines, it could only be fired while surfaced; a major limitation.
A total of 190 were built, plus some for testing. It was tasked with both anti-shipping missions, and tactical nuclear strike against NATO ports and coastal airfields. The weapon was retired in 1994 along with the last Russian SSG. (A single Knyda class cruiser, Admiral Glovoko, served until 2001 but most certainly had the SS-N-3 system deactivated long before that)
