GBU-39 SDB

GBU-39 Small-Diameter Bomb

(United States)

Under development in 2006, the SDB is designed to allow planes to carry more weapons per sortie, yet still deliver an effective “punch” per weapon. The GBU-39 uses advanced aerodynamics to deliver the force of a typical 2000lb bomb. Two versions are envisioned; a GPS-guided model for use against bunkers, harbour facilities, etc; and a IR-homing version for use against tanks and warships.

During a 2006 test, the SDB demonstrated an ability to penetrate a 6’ thick concrete bunker, yet, the accuracy to also destroy a target truck.
