EM-52/55 rising mine

EM-52 (T-1) and EM-55 rising mine

(China)

This submarine-laid mine is deployed via standard 21” torpedo tubes. The fuse is acoustic; when a target is detected it uses a solid rocket to rise vertically. It is unguided in the ascent phase, making it more suitable for use against large, slow targets like supertankers than warships. “T-1” is the export designation for North Korea and Iran.

The EM-55 replaced the EM-52 in production in February 2005. It has a more durable casing, and according to some sources, a guidance system for the ascent phase. It is not being offered for export.
