Notes: These four ships were ordered from West Germany in 1978 as oceanography vessels for the South African Department Of Transportation. The first two were delivered via the liftship Uhenfels, the second pair were built in Durban with West German assistance. In 1982, sweep gear was added due to a lack of minesweepers because of the arms embargo; however they were not armed and formally handed over to the navy until 1988.
The ships are well-equipped, in addition to the minesweeping gear they have a RHIB, a decompression chamber, and a scuba support compartment that can be removed to carry additional minesweeping gear.
