The Il-18 was developed in the 1950s as a 75 to 100 seat airliner. In a move virtually paralleling the Lockheed Electra story the aircraft emerged as a four turboprop powered design and was chosen to form the basis of a maritime patrol and ASW aircraft. The Il-38 (NATO reporting name 'May') features a 4m fuselage stretch and has the wings moved forwarded. The aircraft is fitted with a MAD, a search radar and two weapons bays for carrying torpedos, sonobouys and depth charges. The Il-20 (NATO reporting name 'Coot-B') is an ELINT reconnaissance aircraft and features an airfram festooned with antenna. The Il-22 is an airborne command post. | |
