MER-6A Blue Scout emergency rocket communications system
(United States)
Notes: Manufactured by Ford, the Blue Scout was a unique rocket, designed to maintain communications over North America in the event of a nuclear war. The payload was a high-power HF radio transmitter that could transmit short, simple messages to EMP-hardened receivers in the USAF’s ICMB silo fields. An unknown number were built and based at three sites in Nebraska.
The MER-6A became operational in 1962 and was withdrawn in 1968, when it was replaced in the ERCS role by modified LGM-30 Minuteman ICBMs. These in turn were withdrawn in 1994 when a combination of redundant satellites and reduced risk of nuclear war ended the ERCS programme completely.
